“This original story is set in South Africa during the gold rush of the late 1890s. In it, a budding prospector leaves England to make his fortune in Africa’s ‘El Dorado’, bidding farewell to his love and promising to return with gold and jewels. Only, all does not go to plan. The supposed ‘rivers of gold’ are little more than streams of silt. In poverty and desperation, he enlists in the army at the start of the 2nd Boer War and returns a broken man.”
